Why and how can you join our grassroots organization
Who are the members?
Membership in the League of Women Voters, the most respected and effective grassroots organization in the country, is open to all people aged 16 and older.
Our members make a visible difference by serving as community leaders using their experience to create positive, lasting change in our communities.

Why should I join?
Through participation in League projects, you will:
-
contribute valuable service to the community
-
gain knowledge and experience through the study and discussion of timely and important topics
-
discover new interests, develop new skills and learn about crucial issues in your community
-
make professional contacts and develop lasting friendships as you meet others in League who share your interests
How much time does it take?
It's up to you! Many members choose to support the League only with their annual dues. Your membership alone gives us the political influence needed to build a voice for citizens and a force for change. We cover a broad spectrum of issues and concerns; you may choose to become involved in one or more of them by actively participating in a group study, or listening to a panel of experts at a meeting or just reading about them in one of our publications.
What do I get?
You automatically become a member of LWV Michigan and LWV of the United States. You will receive their publications along with the newsletter from the Lansing Area League of Women Voters called Capitol Voter which is usually published 10 times each year . You will have the knowledge that you are adding your voice to a powerful force of members from all 50 states, Washington DC, the Virgin Islands, and Hong Kong.

What do we do with your membership fee?
-
The annual dues are $65.00 for an individual. Only $10 of that goes to our local League, $32.00 of that goes to LWV-US, $23.00 for LWV-MI. If another member resides in the same household, the dues for the household are $97.50. (Dues for the second member in a household are $32.50 – half of the first member’s dues for all levels.) Student membership is at no cost (as of 2022). We do receive money in the form of grants from both the state and national Leagues, so a lot of the money that goes up also comes down to us!
-
We recognize that it is convenient for many to pay online with a credit card or PayPal. There is a fee for that which comes out of our $10. It’s nearly $2.50 for an individual membership, more for a family. (We rounded up for the sake of simplicity.) We are offering the option to voluntarily add a “tip” to your dues this year. All tips are appreciated and count toward that karma that we all need.
-
You can also make a donation in addition to your dues. Your financial support will help with such things as postage for mailings, duplication of Voter Guides, printing educational materials, purchasing software such as Zoom, and the cost of maintaining our web site. Please note that dues and contributions to LWV-LA are not tax deductible. However, donations to the LWV Education Fund are tax deductible.
